To truly understand Jess, you need to understand her history. As a young girl, it was fairly obvious she wasn’t going to be “normal”. Born to two heroin-hooked parents, she was a disruptive child from the start. When she was old enough to throw temper tantrums, she took the liberty of letting her parents know how much she hated wearing the little second-rate dresses she was shoved into. She always preferred pants to dresses, and actually begged her parents for boy’s clothing, though they never let her. As she grew older, she began starting fights with the boys of the neighborhood, getting in trouble during her first year of school on a regular basis, for everything from yelling at her teachers to sneaking off a pair of safety scissors so she could cut her hair in the bathroom.
She spent some time with some relatives while her parents were off in rehab, but she took advantage of the freedom she found in her new house, and started dressing how she wanted, her aunt believing that it was just a phase, and that she would grow out of it eventually. She didn’t. Her parents came back, and stayed clean for maybe a year of irritating urges to return, before substituting their previous addiction with alcohol. They slowly became angry, and, eventually, violent, accusing Jess of being a freak of nature, since she refused to let her hair grow out or wear girls’ clothing. After a while, Jess began rebelling against their parents, and it became a widely-known fact in her neighborhood that the Jameson child always left home with a few new bruises each day. There would be small spurts of time when things would seem to get better, but her parents always relapsed, and things always got worse.
They reached their peak when her parents finally relapsed back into heroin abuse, and started dealing as well. There were always crazy strangers at the house, and Jess spent as much time as she could get away with out of the house and with friends, following in her parents footsteps and sinking into drug addictions. She was indiscriminate, taking whatever was around when she was ready for it. She stole money from her parents in small doses, not caring after a certain point what did or didn’t happen to her. When she was sixteen, one of her older friends saved her life, forcing her to throw up as she was in the middle of an overdose, which was, unfortunately, not her first. He sat her down for a long, serious talk, and shortly after she got into contact with some of her slightly distant relatives in America. She applied for a passport, and the night she was due to depart, while her parents were asleep she stole a very large sum of money from them, and ran away.
She’s lived in America for the past three years of her life, but could only stay with her family for so long. She eventually had to move out, unable to completely get over her drug habits, and to try and keep her parents from finding her. So, at seventeen she moved to Los Angeles, with nothing but an old beat-up car and the money she had stolen from her parents, and began her career as a tattoo artist. She’s been interning for over a year now, and is now actually working on building her reputation as a tattoo artist, as she is running out of money to support herself, even in the housing program she’s joined. She’s spent most of her money on testosterone pills and to get onto a program to eventually change fully into a male.
Personality
Jess is a… Rather difficult person to explain. She has a tendency to be self-conscious in very drastic but well-hidden ways, covering up any insecurities with sharp comments and withdrawing into a shell she’s built around herself. She’s completely homosexual, and is a little more accepting of the fact after a few years away from her parents, but still lets people believe she’s a guy when they first meet her. Her voice has lowered slightly, and her breasts have shrunk, but she’s yet to progress further into her treatment, due to her counselor wanting to be sure she’s “ready” for as much before taking the next step.
For the most part, though, Jess is just one big fiery ball of resentment and anger. She’s quick to argue, and never backs down from a fight, which has gotten her in trouble on more than one occasion. She can be agreeable enough to begin with, but is socially awkward on a level that only she can understand, not knowing how to properly interact with strangers. If she is made to feel embarrassed or stupid, she will lash out quicker than you can process. There are a lot of underlying problems and feelings to Jess, but very few people are able to experience that side of her, and she rarely opens up to anyone. Her big secret: She’s terrified of being found by her parents.
