DETECTIVE; Your name is Amethyst Betrys Capello. correct? Your parents are...?
AMETHYST; Yes, it is. My parents are Jethro and Emilia Capello.
DETECTIVE; When is your birthday and how old are you?
AMETHYST; My birthday is December 3rd and I'm eightteen years old.
DETECTIVE; Tell me about yourself, Amethyst. What was your life like while your parents were still together.
AMETHYST; What does that have to do with anything? About while my parents were still together? Wouldn't they still be together in death do they part? My life was fine while I was growing up. I had a lovely family, an older brother who took part in things my parents didn't approve of, but he was a boy. What did you expect for a boy who wanted attention after getting me?
DETECTIVE; This is only for record purposes. Its to help us solve the murder of your mother's death. That is all. It would be wise to answer the questions truthfully and to the point. What kind of trouble did your brother get in and how much older was he than you?
AMETHYST; My brother, Ash, is nearly seven years older than I am. He'd be 25 now. Oh his own, smoking pot or the sort. Whatever he can get his hands on. The trouble he got into was what every seven year old did. Caused a mess and blamed it on the baby. What more is there to say about that? [sees the glare of the detective at her smart alec remark.] Okay fine. He liked to make messes from his toys and never cleaned them up. Or he would bring mud into the house after a recent rain storm. He liked to cause messes that my mother couldn't clean up without the carpet cleaner.
DETECTIVE; How did he react to when you were born and your parents spent most of their time looking after you?
AMETHYST; I think he was a bit jealous that he wasn't an only child and had to learn to share our parents. Though I think he was fine when it was just dad and him because mom would just tell them to go have some fun while I was with her at home. Or at least that was what I was told. Mom and I would have our own time, though I don't remember any of it because who remember things as a baby?
DETECTIVE; These questions are to the point. Please do not continue on with nonsense that isn't relative to the question. What is the earliest memory you have of your mother?
AMETHYST; The earliest memory? I think it would have been when I was three. I remember her coming into my room when I had a nightmare about someone coming into the house and taking me away. We had a burglar break into the house a few months before and I had been having nightmares about it. It didn't happen often, but it was something I could easily remember. Her coming in to comfort me and sit with me until I fell back to sleep.
DETECTIVE; And where was your father during this time?
AMETHYST; He was at work. He's a technician for the movie sets. He helps build some of the scenes that the actors need to make the movie look real and give them some kind of scenery to help act the scene out.
DETECTIVE; What was your mother's employment, or last place of employment before her death? [shuffles papers around trying to get his pen to work again.]
AMETHYST; [shifts in seat, feeling a little uncomfortable]
She was a housewife. Never worked a day in her life, from as far as I can remember. She may of had a job at the fabric store. She did like to knit and crochet. She knit me all kinds of scarves and gloves during the winter time every time I lost a pair.
DETECTIVE; What do you remember of the night of your mother's murder?
AMETHYST; We were at the mall trying to get her a birthday present. Her birthday was the next day and Dad wanted to make sure we got her something special even if it was cheesy. At least she knew we cared. Dad had been distracted while Ash and I were looking at the different kinds of jewelry that Mom would have liked. She would have liked patterns to knit and crochet for that matter. She was never picky. That was one of the things she taught us. Not to be so dependent on one thing.
DETECTIVE; Did someone alert you of your mother's murder or was it a complete surprise to you when you found her body?
AMETHYST; It was a surprise to us, but Ash and I never saw her body or the scene of the crime. We had just came home from getting take out from the nearby Chinese restaurant near the house. Dad had been out of the car first and told us to stay in after seeing the door was slightly ajar. Mom either had the door fully opened or closed. So it worried him a bit. He had already drawn his weapon as he pushed opened the door.
DETECTIVE; What happened after he came back out if he came back out at all? And what happened with you and your brother, Ash?
AMETHYST; He came back out to wait with us until the police showed up. He had called them while he was still inside. His hands were covered in her blood. I think he may have been trying to see if she was alive still. Or trying to keep her alive. I don't know. She was dead by the time the police got there so I think she was dead by the time we got home.
DETECTIVE; How old were you when this happened?
AMETHYST; I was 13 and Ash was 20. He went to the community college and lived at home to avoid paying money to live in the dorms.
DETECTIVE; How was your life turned around after this event? Did you ever stay in the house you lived at where your mother was murdered or did you move?
AMETHYST; Dad made us moved after the funeral. The house brought too much memories back for us. And the carpet may have been replaced, but it still felt like we were walking on blood every time we walked into the living room. So we moved to Hancock Park to live with our grandfather, my dad's father.
DETECTIVE; Did your dad ever remarry or see anyone?
AMETHYST; [fidgets with her thumbs a bit. A little uneasy with the questions, tears almost welling up in her eyes.] No. He felt content living with grandpa and didn't want to be a burden on us if he got remarried.
DETECTIVE; How was living with your grandfather?
AMETHYST; It was okay. Grandpa is a director of some sorts. At least I think he is. Well not anymore. He stays in the study all day and doesn't do much of anything else.
DETECTIVE; And where was your grandmother?
AMETHYST; She had passed away years before I was born. So I didn't know her, Ash may have known her, but there aren't any pictures in the house to know what she looks like.
DETECTIVE; How was school for you?
AMETHYST; School was fine for me. I had a few hard months while I was still in the grief mode where I didn't want to do anything, but my best friend helped me through those months. Often times pushing me along to do my homework.
DETECTIVE; So which school did you go to?
AMETHYST; Ash and I went to Fairfax. Or Ash did go to Fairfax to finish his schooling. He graduated from the college here a year ago or so. So I'm finishing my senior year up at Fairfax High.
DETECTIVE; I think that's all I have need for you. We'll be in touch. [starts to pack up his things.] Have a good day!
AMETHYST; You too! [breaths a sign of relief]
