chinatown and little tokyo are the cultural contrasts between the average districts and neighborhoods of la. many notable celebrities of chinese and japanese backgrounds have originated from this area, as much of the attractions in these neighborhoods are devoted to preserving the culture.

skid row is best known for being the place with the highest percentage of homeless people in the world. this is the lower end of los angeles. the poor and the homeless reign over mostly everyone. it is more commonly referred to as central city east.

harbor city is a community located on the coast on the edge of the los angeles county line. its population is made up of mostly middle-class or working-class families. its friendly neighborhoods serve as a nice in-between for both wilshire and the downtown area.

the harbor gateway is a southernmost community stretching a full two miles. it is referred to the 'gateway' because it must be navigated through to reach the other areas of the harbor district. small stores and apartment housing exist here.

the port of los angeles refers to the area closest to the ocean. this is where boats sail and sand prevails. palm trees dominate over birch and maples and bathing suits are worn more often than casual apparel. you'll find that in the shopping centers here, the 'no shirt, no service' rule does not apply.

rattlesnake island is a terminal island once used to house pearl harbor veterans. although most of the veteran families have moved elsewhere, some still remain. however, the residential areas of rattlesnake island are not limited to veterans. many houses are for sale at all times. you will find that there are many benefits of staying or vacationing on rattlesnake island!

wilmington is a historic district in the harbor era, first erected just years prior to the civil war. old victorian homes as well as federal style have been scattered around this neighborhood. the community also offers a taste of the old and its own version of the new.

wilshire boulevard is a particularly famous stretch in la. it is mottled with large, encompassing buildings and prospering businesses. subways and trains are used to navigate the area just as commonly as cars.

the fairfax district is best known for its populous jewish community, which is why it is sometimes referred to as "kosher canyon", although it is not limited to the jewish only. it is further defined by the family owned and operated shops.

the wilshire center is one of the oldest communities in los angeles. it contributes housing opportunities as well as restaurants and multiple shops. luckily, in this part of the wilshire district, you don't have to have a bustling bank account or a notorious family name to get by.
